New Year, New You

It's 2021 and if you're ready to start taking action and giving back you are not alone.

In a recent report from Points of Light, 82% of people agree we all must get involved to rebuild our communities and country post-COVID-19.

But where to start? There are so many needs to address in a community. Sometimes it's not clear or easy to figure out the best way to use your time to give back and make a difference.

Here's a few tips to get you started:

Ask yourself what are you passionate about? What are the causes that are close to your heart? Search for charities near you that support these efforts and then go to their volunteer page to find out what type of support they need.

Another tip for volunteering in 2021 is to consider the impact COVID-19 has had on food-insecurity, both locally and around the world. Volunteers needed to support local food banks, food pantries and soup kitchens will be in even greater demand than they usually are.

One of the easiest ways to get started volunteering in 2021 is to connect with your local volunteer connector agency that maintains a list of searchable volunteer opportunities (Pro tip: Volunteer New York! is one of them). Use their volunteer search engine to find short-term and long-term volunteer opportunities that fit your schedule, location, and the type of impact you are looking to make!

Nonprofits like volunteernewyork.org also offer events that support your community like National Day of Service events (MLK Day and 9/11 Day), and major volunteer recognition events (Volunteer Spirit Awards). There may also provide additional programs, workshops or panel discussions that you can take part to further your connection to your community.

One of the most important tips for volunteering in 2021 is to continue to stay safe and follow best practices provided by your state and local government. Many nonprofit organizations that have been crucial to COVID-19 recovery have created virtual or DIY volunteer opportunities you can do from the safety of your own home. Please do your part by staying home and resting if you feel sick or have been around others who are sick.
